Common questions

What happens in the first session?

It can be daunting seeing a health professional for the first time. I am always warm and chatty and hopefully you will feel relaxed pretty quickly!

On your first visit I will take a full history including your current problems, plus previous illnesses or injuries, any surgeries, what medication you take (if any) etc etc. This helps me to get a good understanding of your current overall health and any conditions I need to take into consideration.

I will then do a thorough standing exam to see how you like to naturally hold yourself, and areas of obvious muscle weakness/wastage etc. I will palpate (feel) for muscle tightness, swelling, pelvic levels etc and I may need to see certain areas (eg shoulders, lower back etc) so bringing a singlet and shorts is always handy.

A few simple standing movements to see how well you move in different ranges and then I will do a "passive exam" on the treatment table. This allows me to feel how different areas move and allows me to feel for joint restrictions, inflammation etc.

All this helps me to build a clear picture of not only the problem you have come in with but also how the rest of your body is compensating.

Based on all my findings I will treat necessary areas and will often recommend simple exercises, lifestyle changes, may apply kinesiology tape if needed.

Treatments are gentle and I will always explain what I am doing. I always welcome questions! It's not unusual to feel some post treatment discomfort or to feel fatigued for 24-48 hours. This is a really normal response as your body processes the changes I have asked it to make. If you are concerned though please get in touch.

About Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a proven form of manual therapy that works with the joints, muscles, fascia and organs of the body to restore mobility and function and to reduce pain. Treatments are tailored to each individual patient and I can refer for X-rays and imaging and to consultants as needed.

"To find health should be the objective of the doctor. Anyone can find disease"
